LegalShield Review: What a Prepaid Lawyer Plan Really Covers for Contracts

We checked the pricing page and document review limits ourselves, then compared Trustpilot, BBB, G2, SmartCustomer and Reddit feedback. The scores disagree, and the reasons matter.

Summary

LegalShield review in brief: LegalShield is a US prepaid legal plan that connects members to a provider law firm in their state, with personal plans from $39.95 to $59.95 a month. Contract review is capped at 15 to 35 pages for personal plans and 6 to 100 checks a year on business plans. Trustpilot shows 4.5/5 from 9,388 reviews, but BBB shows 3.42/5 from 346 reviews and 345 complaints in three years. It suits people who want cheap, repeated access to a lawyer on routine matters. It does not suit complex disputes or readers outside the US and Canada.

6.5 /10

LegalShield is a US prepaid legal plan, not an AI tool: you pay $39.95 to $59.95 a month (personal) for access to a provider law firm in your state, including document review capped at 15 to 35 pages. Trustpilot shows 4.5/5 from 9,388 reviews, yet BBB shows 3.42/5 from 346 and logs 345 complaints in three years. Good for routine questions and a first read of a lease or NDA; weak when a dispute gets serious.

  • Document review is capped by pages and by count: 15 pages on Basic personal, and only 6 checks a year of 25 pages on Small Business Basic
  • BBB logs 345 complaints in three years, mostly service and product issues, and reviewers describe slow callbacks
  • You do not choose your lawyer, and anything outside covered benefits is billed at a discounted hourly rate

We did not buy a LegalShield membership and we did not speak to a provider lawyer, and we say so plainly rather than imply a hands-on test. On October 7, 2026 we read LegalShield's homepage, its full plan comparison tables for personal and small business memberships, its contracts page and its Elle AI document review page, and we took the screenshots in this review ourselves. We then read the live rating pages on Trustpilot (4.5/5, 9,388 reviews), BBB (3.42/5 from 346 customer reviews, plus the complaints tab), G2 (3.9/5, 11 reviews) and SmartCustomer, and excerpts of Reddit threads. Quality of legal advice cannot be measured from outside, so we do not score it.

Should you use LegalShield?

YES if you...

  • Freelancers, landlords and small business owners in the US who want to ask a lawyer a routine question without watching a clock
  • People who regularly receive leases, NDAs or vendor agreements of under 15 to 35 pages and want a human to read them
  • Households that want a will and power of attorney prepared as part of a flat membership

NO if you...

  • Anyone based in the EU, the UK or Switzerland: LegalShield only operates in the United States and parts of Canada
  • Anyone already in a dispute that started before the membership: pre-existing matters are excluded from full coverage
  • Teams reviewing dozens of long contracts a month: even Small Business Premium caps checks at 100 a year
  • Anyone who wants to pick their own lawyer instead of the provider law firm assigned in their state

2 business owners, 10 authorized users

  • 100 document checks a year, 50 pages each
  • Unlimited lawyer letters and calls
  • IRS audit help up to 90 hours

ROI breakdown: If you use every document check, Small Business Basic works out to about $108 per 25-page review ($647.46 a year for 6 checks). That compares with the $150 to $400 per hour that LegalShield's own contracts page quotes for business lawyers, but only if you actually use all six checks and the matter fits the plan.

Hidden costs & gotchas
  • Third-party reviews are stale: NerdWallet and MarketWatch list Small Business Basic at $49 a month, the vendor page now shows $59.95
  • Anything outside the covered benefits, such as complex litigation, is billed at a 15% to 25% discount off the provider firm's hourly rate, not included
  • Cancellation requests must be made in writing, and annual memberships can only be cancelled after the first 12 months, per LegalShield's own Trustpilot profile
  • Civil actions, traffic charges and IRS notices that began before the membership are excluded

Pros and cons

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Flat monthly fee for repeated access to a lawyer Unlimited consultations on covered matters mean you can ask a small question without calculating a bill first.
  • Published, comparable pricing Every tier and its document review cap is on the pricing page.
  • Free Elle review as a no-risk first pass Elle accepts documents up to 25 MB with no account and no page limit.
  • Strong volume of positive reviews on Trustpilot 9,388 reviews at 4.5/5.

Cons

  • Document review is capped by pages and by count Personal Basic stops at 15 pages. Small Business Basic allows 6 checks a year.
  • Complaints cluster around service and responsiveness BBB lists 345 complaints in three years, 105 for service and 104 for product issues. Reviewers describe callbacks that took days.
  • You do not choose your lawyer You are assigned the provider law firm for your state and may speak to different lawyers for different areas of law.
  • Coverage ends where disputes get expensive Pre-existing situations, international, military and tribal law are excluded, and anything beyond covered benefits is billed at a 15% to 25% discount off hourly rates.
  • Sales structure draws repeated criticism Reddit threads and a recent one-star Trustpilot review raise the multi-level marketing sales model. LegalShield's own FAQ acknowledges independent associates and denies the service is a scam.
Verdict

Final verdict: a useful phone line to a lawyer, not a contract review engine

6.5 /10

LegalShield sells something specific: a monthly fee for a phone line to a provider law firm. For a freelancer who gets a lease, an NDA or a vendor agreement a few times a year, a human lawyer reading 15 to 25 pages for roughly $36 to $50 a month can be reasonable value, and the strongest feedback on Trustpilot and Reddit comes from exactly those routine uses.

The weak spots are as consistent as the strengths. Review caps are low on the entry tiers, coverage stops where disputes become expensive, and BBB records 345 complaints in three years against a Trustpilot score built on invited reviews.

If you are in the US, read the plan contract for exclusions, test Elle on a document you already own, and treat the first month as a trial of lawyer responsiveness. In the EU, the UK or Switzerland this product is not available. For any significant contract, check the result with your own counsel before signing.

Common questions

Is LegalShield legit?
Yes. It reports over 50 years in business and has been BBB accredited since 1995 with an A+ rating. Legitimate does not mean flawless: BBB lists 345 complaints in three years, and some reviewers criticize its multi-level marketing sales model.
How much does LegalShield cost per month?
Personal plans are $39.95, $49.95 and $59.95 month to month, or $35.95, $44.95 and $53.95 billed annually. Small business plans are $59.95, $99.95 and $169.95 monthly, per the vendor pricing page in October 2026.
Does LegalShield review contracts?
Yes, within limits. Personal plans cover document review of up to 15, 25 or 35 pages by tier. Business plans allow 6, 12 or 100 document checks a year at 25, 35 or 50 pages each.
Can I cancel LegalShield anytime?
Monthly memberships can be cancelled at any time, but requests must be in writing. Annual memberships can be cancelled after the first 12 months, per the company's own Trustpilot description.
Is LegalShield available in Europe?
No. It provides access to provider law firms in the United States and parts of Canada only. Readers in the EU, the UK or Switzerland should look at local legal protection insurance or a local lawyer.

Yes. Elle needs no account or membership, accepts files up to 25 MB and emails a plain-language summary with questions for a lawyer. LegalShield states it is not a lawyer.
